Over Skincare for Oily Skin Types

Oily skin gets shiny quickly, especially on the forehead, nose and chin. Pores are often a little larger, and blackheads or breakouts show up more easily. This happens because your sebaceous glands produce more sebum, or skin oil, than your skin actually needs. This collection holds cleansers, exfoliants, light serums, mattifying moisturisers and SPF to match.

What to look for with oily skin

  • Salicylic acid (BHA). This acid dissolves in oil and travels into the pore. It helps with clogged pores and blackheads. Two to three times a week is usually enough. The ANUA Heartleaf 77% Clear Pads target the same concern with a textured, exfoliating pad instead of a leave-on acid.
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3). It helps with shine and makes pores look smaller. It's mild and suits almost any skin.
  • Light textures. Choose a gel or a light lotion instead of a rich cream. Skipping moisturiser altogether isn't a good idea: oily skin needs hydration too.
  • Don't cleanse too hard. A scrub or a cleanser that leaves your skin "squeaky clean" dries it out. Your sebaceous glands then respond by producing even more oil.
  • SPF every day. Choose a mattifying formula so it doesn't feel greasy. Read more about sun protection.

Building a routine

Morning

  1. Cleanse with a mild gel cleanser, such as the Medik8 Surface Radiance Cleanse with mandelic, lactic and salicylic acid.
  2. Apply a serum with niacinamide, for example Medik8 Niacinamide Peptides with 10% niacinamide.
  3. Finish with a mattifying day cream with SPF, such as the Image Skincare Sheer Matte Moisturizer SPF 30.

Evening

  1. Cleanse again, even on days without make-up.
  2. Use a salicylic acid exfoliant on two or three set evenings a week. On the other evenings, use your niacinamide serum.
  3. Always finish with a light moisturiser.

Advice from our skin therapist

In practice, we often see that people with oily skin do too much. Cleansing three times a day, an acid every evening, and skipping moisturiser out of fear of shine. The result is skin that feels tight and looks shiny at the same time, because dehydrated skin produces extra oil to compensate.

Our advice: cleanse twice a day, not more. Use salicylic acid on two or three set evenings and leave your skin alone the rest of the week. Always apply a light moisturiser, even when your skin feels oily. Give a new routine six to eight weeks before judging it. If breakouts stay inflamed and painful, see a skin therapist or GP.
