Over Skincare for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin reacts quickly: redness, stinging or a tight feeling after a new product, cold, wind or a hot shower. It isn't a skin type on its own. Oily or dry skin can be sensitive too. Often the skin barrier, the protective outer layer of your skin, is somewhat weakened. This collection holds mild cleansers, calming serums, fragrance-free creams and mineral SPF.

What to look for with sensitive skin

  • As few triggers as possible. Fragrance, alcohol and essential oils are the best-known culprits.
  • Calming ingredients. Panthenol (vitamin B5), aloe vera and ceramides (fats that hold the skin barrier together) help settle the skin. The ANUA Heartleaf 70% Intense Calming Cream combines Panthenol with a ceramide for this kind of calming care.
  • Mineral SPF. Filters based on zinc oxide sit on top of the skin and are often better tolerated.
  • Go easy on acids and vitamin A. They can work for sensitive skin, but at a low strength and on one evening a week. Never introduce two new active products at once.
  • Test first. Apply a new product to your jawline for three days. No reaction? Then it's fine to use on your face.
  • Quick to flush or react. The mesoestetic melan recovery is a soothing cream built for skin that flushes red quickly or reacts easily. Read more about redness.

Building a routine

Morning

  1. Cleanse with lukewarm water and a creamy cleanser, such as the ALPHA-H Balancing Cleanser with vitamin E and aloe vera.
  2. Apply a calming serum, for example the ALPHA-H Vitamin E Serum with 1% vitamin E and a 1% ceramide complex.
  3. Finish with a mineral SPF, such as the Image Skincare Advanced Smartblend Mineral Moisturizer SPF 50+ with 10.5% zinc oxide.

Evening

  1. Cleanse again with the same mild cleanser.
  2. Apply your calming serum, followed by a fragrance-free cream.
  3. Want to try an active product? Keep it to the same evening each week.

Advice from our skin therapist

In practice, we see that sensitive skin is often not born that way but made that way. Too many products, an acid used too often, hot water and a scrub at the weekend. The skin barrier weakens and then reacts to everything.

Our advice: strip back to what you actually need. For four weeks, use only a mild cleanser, a calming serum or cream and a mineral SPF. Once your skin settles, add one product at a time.

Does the redness stay, or do you notice small visible blood vessels or bumps on your cheeks and nose? Have it checked by a skin therapist or GP. That can be rosacea or couperose.
