Over Redness: Calming Skincare for Sensitive Skin

Red skin can have many causes: a weakened skin barrier, products that are too strong, cold, sun, or a tendency toward rosacea or couperose. Redness is a sign that your skin is irritated, not a skin type in itself. In this collection you'll find mild cleansers, calming serums and creams, and mineral SPF. All chosen to trigger as few reactions as possible.

What to look for with redness

  • Know what you're dealing with. Redness that fades within an hour is different from redness that stays. Flare-ups with small bumps can point to rosacea, fine visible blood vessels to couperose. Have redness that doesn't go away checked by a skin therapist or your doctor.
  • Calming ingredients. Niacinamide (vitamin B3), panthenol (vitamin B5), bisabolol (a calming ingredient from chamomile) and ceramides (lipids that hold the skin barrier together).
  • Mineral SPF, every day. Sun makes redness worse. Filters with zinc oxide stay on the skin and are often better tolerated.
  • Avoid triggers. Fragrance, alcohol, scrubs, hot water and strong acids.
  • One new product at a time. Test it on your jawline for three days before using it on your face.

How to build a routine

Morning

  1. Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, free of foam and fragrance.
  2. Apply a calming serum, such as the ALPHA-H Vitamin E Serum with 1% vitamin E and a 1% ceramide complex.
  3. Finish with a mineral SPF, such as the Image Skincare Advanced Smartblend Mineral Moisturizer SPF 50+ with 10.5% zinc oxide.

Evening

  1. Cleanse again with the same mild cleanser.
  2. Apply your serum, followed by a calming cream, such as the ANUA Heartleaf 70% Intense Calming Cream with panthenol and ceramide.
  3. Leave acids and vitamin A out of your routine until your skin has calmed down.

Advice from our skin therapist

In practice, we see that redness is often linked to doing too much. A scrub, an acid and a vitamin C serum in the same week is too much for irritated skin. The skin barrier gets damaged and then reacts to everything, even water.

Our advice: go back to three steps for four weeks. A mild cleanser, a calming serum or cream, and mineral SPF. If your skin settles down, you know your routine was the cause. Does the redness stay, or do you notice small bumps or visible blood vessels on your cheeks or nose? Have it looked at by a skin therapist or your doctor.
