Over Face Toners and Facial Mists

A toner, or facial toner, is the step between cleansing and your serum. Toners used to be meant to degrease the skin and were full of alcohol. Today, most do one of two things: hydrate, or exfoliate with a mild acid that loosens dead skin cells. A mist is a spray-on version you can also use during the day. This collection holds hydrating toners, exfoliating toners and facial mists.

Which facial toner suits you?

  • Dry or dehydrated skin. Apply a hydrating toner to still-damp skin. The ISNTREE Hyaluronic Acid Toner contains five types of hyaluronic acid.
  • Clogged pores. An exfoliating toner with BHA helps clear clogged pores, such as the ISNTREE Chestnut BHA 2% Clear Liquid. Read more about oily skin.
  • Uneven skin texture. The COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner combines both types of acid.
  • A quick refresh during the day. A facial mist such as the mesoestetic hydratonic mist suits all skin types, even over make-up.

How do you use a toner?

  • Right after cleansing, on skin that's still slightly damp, with your hands or a cotton pad.
  • A hydrating toner can be used every day, morning and evening.
  • An exfoliating toner can't. It counts as your exfoliant: once to three times a week, and not alongside another peel.
  • If your skin still feels tight after a hydrating toner, it's too strong for you. With an exfoliating toner, a brief tingle can be normal. If it lingers, use it less often.
  • A toner isn't a required step. Cleansing, caring for and protecting your skin form the basics. A toner is an addition.

Advice from our skin therapist

We notice that many people still think of toners as the tight, stinging stuff from years ago. That image no longer matches what's actually in them today.

Our advice: choose based on what your skin needs. Want to hydrate? Pick a toner with hyaluronic acid. Want to exfoliate? Pick one with an acid, but count it as your weekly exfoliant.

If you already use a separate exfoliant, a hydrating toner is the logical choice.
