Over Skincare for Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin feels tight, especially after cleansing, and looks dull, with fine lines that stand out most in the morning. The difference with dry skin: dry skin lacks oil, dehydrated skin lacks water. That's why oily or combination skin can be dehydrated too. This collection holds mild cleansers, serums with hyaluronic acid, moisturisers that lock in water and hydrating SPF.

What to look for with dehydrated skin

  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin. These ingredients draw water into the skin and hold it there. Apply them to skin that's still slightly damp.
  • Seal it in. Without a cream over your serum, the water evaporates again. A moisturiser with squalane or jojoba oil locks it in.
  • Gentle cleansing. Foaming cleansers and hot water pull water out of the skin. Choose a cream, oil or gel cleanser and lukewarm water.
  • Fewer acids. Dehydrated skin tolerates exfoliants, products with an acid that loosens dead skin cells, worse than you'd expect. Once a week is usually enough.
  • Drinking water barely helps. Your skin holds on to moisture through what you apply, not through what you drink.

Advice from our skin therapist

In practice, we see many people with oily skin who are actually dehydrated. They cleanse hard, use an acid every evening and skip the cream. The skin looks shiny and feels tight at the same time, and produces even more oil to protect itself.

Our advice: stop using all acids and scrubs for two weeks. Use a mild cleanser, a hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin and a cream over it, morning and evening. Skin usually feels softer within a week or two. After that, you can build an exfoliant back in, once a week. If your skin keeps flaking or itching, have it checked by a skin therapist or GP.
