Over Face Serums for Every Skin Goal

A face serum is a light, targeted product within your skincare routine. Serums often carry a high concentration of specific active ingredients and are formulated to address particular skin needs. You use a serum after cleansing your face and before your moisturiser. This collection holds serums with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, retinal, peptides and niacinamide, among others.

Which face serum suits your skin goal?

  • Dry or dehydrated skin. Choose hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that binds water to your skin. The ALPHA-H Hyaluronic 8 Super Serum combines hyaluronic acid of different molecule sizes with ectoin and urea. Apply to slightly damp skin.
  • Dull complexion or dark spots. Vitamin C protects the skin and helps even out your complexion. The Image Skincare VITAL C Hydrating Anti-Aging Serum contains vitamin C with hyaluronic acid and panthenol. Use it in the morning, under your SPF. The Image Skincare ILUMA Intense Brightening Serum is another option for a dull complexion or visible pigment spots.
  • Fine lines. Retinal is a form of vitamin A that works faster than retinol. The Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3 is the lowest strength, so it's a gentle starting point. Evening use only. Read more about fine lines.
  • Redness or sensitive skin. The ALPHA-H Vitamin E Serum contains 1% vitamin E with ceramides, fats that keep the skin barrier intact. Read more about sensitive skin.

What to look for when choosing

  • Start with one serum. Using several at once makes it impossible to tell what's working and raises the risk of irritation.
  • Check the strength. Retinal 3 and retinal 20 are the same ingredient, dosed differently. Build up from low to high.
  • Order matters. Thin to thick, so serum goes on before your cream.
  • Not everything mixes. Vitamin C in the morning, retinal in the evening.
  • Give it the right amount of time. Hyaluronic acid feels good straight away, vitamin C gives a fresher complexion within weeks. For fine lines, as with retinal, count on eight to twelve weeks.

Advice from our skin therapist

We often see people buy a serum based on whichever ingredient is trending, rather than what their skin actually needs. That leaves three serums on the shelf getting in each other's way.

Our advice: pick one skin goal and stick with it for three months. If your skin feels tight, start with hyaluronic acid. If your complexion is dull, start with vitamin C. For fine lines, start with the lowest strength retinal, twice a week.

If you get persistent redness, itching or flaking, pause for a week. If it continues, see a skin therapist.
