Over Fine Lines: Retinol, Vitamin C & SPF

Fine lines are the first sign of skin aging: thin lines around the eyes, on the forehead and beside the mouth. At first you only notice them when you smile or frown, and later even when your face is relaxed. They form because your skin produces less collagen and becomes drier. In this collection you'll find serums with vitamin A and vitamin C, hydrating creams and SPF products that support that.

What to look for with fine lines

  • Vitamin A (retinol). Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It encourages your skin to renew itself faster, which softens fine lines.
  • Vitamin C. An antioxidant: an ingredient that limits damage from sun and pollution. It brightens your complexion and supports collagen production. Use it in the morning, under your SPF.
  • Hydration. Dry skin makes lines look deeper. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin draw in water and help skin hold onto it.
  • SPF every day. Sun exposure is the biggest cause of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Not everything at once. Starting retinol, acids and vitamin C in the same week often leaves skin red. Add one new product a month.

How to build a routine

Morning

  1. Cleanse with a mild cleanser.
  2. Apply a vitamin C serum, such as the ALPHA-H Vitamin C Serum with 3% vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.
  3. Finish with a day cream with SPF, such as the ALPHA-H Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF50+.

Evening

  1. Cleanse again.
  2. Use a vitamin A serum two evenings a week, such as Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3 with retinaldehyde (a stronger form of vitamin A). Build up gradually from there.
  3. Finish with a moisturizer that helps skin hold onto water.

Advice from our skin therapist

In practice, we often see that the first fine lines show up alongside skin that lacks moisture. People then reach straight for a strong anti-aging product, while their skin mostly needs water. After two weeks of proper hydration, the lines are often already softer.

Our advice: start with an SPF you'll actually apply every day and a serum with hyaluronic acid. Add vitamin C in the morning after that. If that goes well, start vitamin A two evenings a week. Give each step six to eight weeks. If you see grooves that stay visible even when your face is relaxed, take a look at our wrinkles collection.
